***** Important Notice ***** If your system does not have the hardware and software to play MPEG movies in Windows, then you must first install the Video for Windows runtime player for the movies to work. Go to the Windows Program Manager and select FILE, then RUN, and type "D:\VFWSETUP\SETUP" (where D is the letter of your CD-ROM drive). Even if you have already loaded a version of Video for Windows, you will still need to run this setup program to load the SuperMatch Cinepak(TM) decompressor. **************************** **** Welcome to Aris Entertainment's Americana(tm) **** Thank you for your purchase. Your Aris disc was created by leading professionals in the electronic publishing field. For technical support, please call or write: Aris Entertainment 310 Washington Blvd, Suite 100 Marina del Rey, CA 90292 (310) 821-0234 fax (310) 821-6463 Copyright Notices: Americana is (c)(p) Copyright 1994 by Aris Multimedia Entertainment, Inc. The SuperMatch Cinepak decompressor is (c) Copyright 1993 by SuperMac Technology. The Video for Windows runtime player software is (c) Copyright 1992 Microsoft, Inc. Portions (c) Copyright 1992 Intel and Media Vision. NOTE: The SuperMatch Cinepak decompressor may not be redistributed by users of Aris products without a valid license agreement from SuperMac Technology. They can be reached at (408) 245-2202. Every attempt has been made to provide Multimedia PC-compatible content, both in images (BMP format) and sound (WAV format). A Windows navigational program can be found in the root directory of the disc. You may install part or all of the software (with the exception of the photos and music) to the hard drive by using the SETUP.EXE program. To do so, choose RUN from the FILE menu of the Windows Program Manager and type D:\SETUP, where D is the letter of your CD-ROM drive. Installing everything to the hard disk provides much better performance, however, it adds about 1.5 MB of files to your hard drive. Buttons in the Windows program may be used with a mouse or with the TAB and ENTER keys. The TAB key moves from button to button, and the ENTER key selects. Standard Windows help is available--just press the button labeled "?" on the "Control Panel" (button bar) in the program. Keep in mind the following requirements: 1. You must have Windows version 3.1 or later to use our navigational program. We have discontinued distributing our MS-DOS non-Windows version, though you can still use the image files on the CD in a DOS application if you have a program that can display them. 2. You must have an MPC-compatible sound card to hear the music. Boards from Creative Labs (the SoundBlaster Pro), Media Vision (Pro Audio Spectrum), and many other vendors have been tested for compatibility with this product. 3. Still pictures were meant to be displayed with a 256, 32K, 64K, or 16M color 640 x 480 Windows driver. Such drivers are available direct from your video board's manufacturer. Drivers for many brands are also included in Aris's "MPC Wizard." You must have at least 512K of video RAM. Use Windows Setup to change your driver. 4. In order to view the MPEG versions of the movies in Windows, your system must have the necessary hardware and software. If your system lacks this hardware, you should still be able to play the movies in the Video for Windows (SuperMatch Cinepak) format. 5. Video for Windows playback requires installation of the Video for Windows runtime drivers. These can be found in the VFWSETUP directory. Just go to the File Manager of Windows, then launch the SETUP.EXE program in the VFWSETUP directory. 6. If the sound breaks up, try to increase the buffering done by Windows. To do this, go to the Main Window, select Control Panel, then select Drivers. Double click on the MCI Sound selection and move the slider to 9 seconds of buffering. If this doesn't entirely solve the problem, you may need to increase the memory buffering in the MSCDEX statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT (the /m: command). Try increasing it to 16 or 20. 7. Movie performance varies, based on the caliber of your installed hardware. Best performance is obtained from MPC-compatible CD-ROM drives, which are capable of transfering data at 150KB per second or greater. You can test the performance of your drive with the MPC Wizard(tm). The disc you have in your CD-ROM drive contains two complete versions of Americana (tm), one for Macintosh, the other for the Windows PC. Your CD-ROM driver is smart enough to figure out which one you view, so sit back and enjoy. Audio is stored in the WAVE directory in Microsoft's WAV format. Audio files have been tested with MPC-compatible sound boards and are of a high-enough quality for multimedia presentations (22 Khz, mono). You must have an MPC compatible sound board with a speaker or headphones to hear the WAV files. The MediaVision ProAudio Spectrum and the Sound Blaster Professional sound boards were used in the development of this product. They are both easy to install and work well. Images are stored in several formats for your convenience: 1. 24-bit TIF, in 640 x 480 format, for high resolution paint programs and desktop publishing, in the TIFF directory. Users with Hi-Color or True-Color cards may view these images with programs capable of 24-bit image display. 2. 8-bit BMP, 640 x 480 format, in the BMPLARGE directory. 3. 8-bit BMP, 320 x 240 format, for high speed viewing, in the BMPSMALL directory. We have also included an excellent file conversion shareware program called IMAGE ALCHEMY in case you need to use one of our images in a format we have not provided. You may use the IMAGE ALCHEMY shareware program for two weeks without registering the software and paying the fee. Please note, this program works well on all 640 x 480 or smaller images. It offers many fine capabilities, such as conversion between many different formats, including Mac and PC, and it should find a home in your imaging utilities directories. The registered version will handle images larger than 640 x 480. ALCHEMY.EXE is copyright (c) 1990-91 by Handmade Software, Inc. Handmade Software is not affiliated or associated with Aris Entertainment, and use of its program does not constitute an endorsement. Movies are stored in the MPEG and Video for Windows (SuperMatch Cinepak) formats. MPEG files can be found in the MPEG directory, and Video for Windows files can be found in the VFW_CINE directory. Audio files are stored in the WAV format, and can be found in the WAVE directory. They were recorded in 22 Khz, 8-bit. ----------------------------------------- PRODUCTS BY ARIS MULTIMEDIA ENTERTAINMENT ----------------------------------------- Multimedia Starter Pak(TM) *Special 3-disc set* Get the most out of your multimedia system with three of the best selling CD-ROMs ever made.
